L - Parking

The L-Parking is first test you do in the yard.  At Al Khebra Driving School the L-Parking bays on the left of the parking lot are bigger than those on the right.  I suggest you master parking in the smaller bays before venturing on to the bigger ones.  I also suggest you practice the L-Parking in all the bays before you do the test.
These are the tips I received from my instructor:
  1. Adjust the right rear view mirrors so you can see the right rear tire  from the driver's seat without having to lean to the right.
  2. Put the car in "LOW" gear.
  3. Drive in between the poles keeping as close to the yellow broken lines when entering the L but do NOT drive on the yellow lines.
  4. Make the right turn up the slope.  Note that there is a line across the driveway.  drive over the line and stop when your right mirror is in line with the first pole on the right.
  5. Apply the handbrake.
  6. Remove your foot from the brake and apply the gas gently until the car is ready to move.
  7. Release the handbrake and drive forward.  (Do not hit the tires, stop safely.)
  8. Apply the brake.
  9. Straighten the steering wheel.
  10. Put the car in reverse
  11. By gently removing your foot from the brake, reverse down the slope. Do not use the gas pedal at all!
  12. Steer as close as possible to the yellow lines on the right side. (Do not drive on the yellow broken lines!)  Keep the right rear tire no more than 3" away from the yellow broken lines.
  13. When the mud guard of the right rear tire is in line with the last yellow broken line apply the brake and make a FULL LOCK.  (Note a few of the automatic cars like 115 have mud guards that have a red line across the bottom which makes it very easy to position the car when doing the L-Parking.  It would be good to do the test in one of those cars.)
  14. Release the brake.  The car will go around the corner without touching the poles as long as you follow the steps above.
  15. Apply the brakes turn the steering twice to straighten.
  16. Reverse straight out of the space without hitting the poles or driving over the yellow lines.
